IoT in Brief

IoT is the short-form for the Internet of Things.

IoT refers to a technology where devices are connected to the internet whereas these devices can access and share data with each other.

A good example of IoT devices is like smartphones, smartwatches and some of the modern air-conditioning and refrigerators.

Being connected to the internet allows these devices to be accessed from far away. Accessing this device can benefit in several ways. For example, we check the status of the device, as simple as their on or off status. Or take some data that are captured by the device, for example, an energy meter which taps on your electric consumption 24 hours a day. All these data are then viewable on your smartphone and smartwatches.

You can adjust the temperature of your air conditioning unit as when you start your drive home only to arrive in a cool sanctuary. You can set on-off schedule for your lighting and other specific devices when you’re away from your home on vacation.

You can also track your health from a smartwatch that you wear and share that data with your physician through your mobile phone. With these kinds of opportunity, you and your physician can monitor how well you are sleeping, how many calories you are burning each day through exercise and give you alerts and suggestion to make your life better.

There are many other smart devices on the market these days. In entertainment, smart tvs and smart speakers are becoming more and more popular. You can access your music and movie libraries between devices and also be connected to online streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.


Smart devices are not only for indoor use. There are plans, for example, to make our street uses smart light bulb where it can turn off when there is no one around. These can contribute to major savings to the local town. Even there are ideas for a self-guided parking lot which can lead you to an empty spot so that you can save time and have a better experience.

Many other data can also be collected from smart devices for example noise pollution, traffic, air quality which can lead to better improvement to our environment and indirectly benefiting our own life someday.

At Work

IoT has been in the workplaces and for now, are mainly focusing towards efficiency and cost saving, for example, a smart light which will turn off automatically when everyone has left for the day and turn back on as when it detected a person in its area. Perhaps this simple solution will be a normal thing in the future so that we can be more energy efficient and save more.

Other smart devices like a printer can also contribute to cost saving as when it can order its own cartridge supply as when it is needed.

The ability to monitor people in the workplace is another aspect of IoT that has proven to be beneficial. It can contribute to the understanding of work efficiency and prepare human resources with challenges on improving human capital.

In Conclusion

Being able to collect data which was not possible in the past due to disconnected devices is perhaps the most important thing about IoT today.

Through this data, we will be able to understand and then work on improvements in life with better smart devices and efficient system.
